Small Town, Big Impact

There’s something powerful about small towns…

Today I returned to East Texas to visit a spot many might miss if they blink — Holly Lake Ranch. Nestled off the beaten path, this community is home to a very engaged and enthusiastic Kiwanis Club, and I had the honor of speaking to them at their Wednesday meeting, held at the Holly Lake Volunteer Fire Department.

Even as the rain poured outside, the energy inside was nothing short of incredible. As part of my “From Flatline to Frontline” speaking series, I shared my story of surviving cardiac arrest and the transformation that followed. These moments are never just about the story — they’re about the people in the room, the questions they ask, and the awareness we build together.

💡 One of the key takeaways I emphasized during my talk was this:
A cardiac arrest is NOT the same as a heart attack.
Understanding that difference could literally save a life — and it’s conversations like these that remind me why I speak.

Of course, no visit to a fire department is complete without noticing the iconic Dalmatian — and yes, I moved the adorable plush mascot just to get a quick photo. (Too cute not to!) 🐶🔥

To the members of Kiwanis Holly Lake Ranch: Thank you for your kindness, your engagement, and for allowing me to share my journey with you. I’ll be carrying this day with me for a long time to come. 💙

Until next time,
