Leadership, Laughter, and Lessons

Yesterday I had the incredible privilege of attending the 2025 Leadership Summit hosted by the Terrell Chamber of Commerce. I had taken a day off from work to be there, and let me tell you… it was worth every second.

The event kicked off with Four Day Weekend, a comedy group from Fort Worth. I had seen them perform before at the Hero’s Dinner in Canton last October, so I knew we were in for something good. But this time, they brought something unexpected. Instead of a full comedy show, they shared their approach to teamwork and creativity through the philosophy of “Yes, and…”. It’s a simple shift in language that can completely change how we respond to ideas, challenges, and people. I didn’t realize how much I needed that message until it hit me right between the eyes.

Next up was a leadership panel featuring several community figures, including Hal Richards — a business owner, former mayor of Terrell, and a fellow Rotarian. I have known Hal for years and I know he is a man with great leadership and knowledge. His insights were grounded, practical, and authentic. One line in particular struck a chord:
“Nobody is more important than anyone else. You may have an important job, but that doesn’t make you a better person.”
That kind of humility in leadership is rare and powerful. It reminded me why I do what I do — to serve, inspire, and uplift, not to seek titles or applause.

After a short break, it was time for the keynote speaker: JP Dinnell, a former Navy SEAL who completed five tours in Iraq. His energy was magnetic. He dove deep into leadership styles, how they impact outcomes, and why adaptability is so critical in high-pressure situations. There’s no way I could recap all the gold from his 90-minute session, but I can say this: it challenged me to think about leadership with new eyes. If you ever get the chance to hear him speak, go. It’s that impactful.

The summit ended with a networking opportunity where I got to reconnect with some familiar faces. Because of my recent focus restructuring my business and EMS schedule, I’ve taken a little step back from local networking. But yesterday reminded me just how much I’ve missed being in the room.

To everyone who played a part in making this event happen – thank you. I left feeling inspired, refreshed, and ready to step into the next chapter of leadership with boldness and clarity.

Until next time!
